Today I’m taking you on a mini virtual tour through my closet and sharing my favorite wardrobe tips. I’ve always loved shopping and keeping my goodies organized has been a hassle that I have had to deal with for the longest time. I recently had a clean slate because this closet is fairly new, but organizing my whole wardrobe by myself was a definite challenge. Over the years I polished my organization skills and with them I started sharing some gems with the people I love to keep maintaining your closet at it’s prime.
Tip 1: Don’t Hoard! We all do it. We keep a pair of tees, sweaters, or skinnies that we haven’t worn in ages. All they do is gather up dust in your closet. I recommend that if you have not worn it in the past year, it should be dropped off at Goodwill because odds are that you are not going to wear them again that year anyway.
Tip 2: Make your investments visible in your closet! There’s nothing worse than forgetting about a nice leather jacket or an amazing pair of boots after the initial hype is gone. This is one of the most frustrating things because after a while you lose sight that those items at the time cost your whole paycheck! I recommend keeping these items visible in your closet that way you don’t forget about them. Whether it’s a handbag or a belt, you deserve to take those babies out for a ride more often than not.
Tip 3: Know your staples! We all know our body and what works best for it. If you know you love your Paige denim, buy them in different colors because you already know the fit! If fit and flare dresses shape your body better, dress shopping spree it is! Try and fill your closet with the items that you’re actually going to use.
Tip 4: Store the memories ! This one is one that I am definitely guilty of. I used to have my prom dress, homecoming dress, wedding dresses that don’t even fit anymore, and my sweet sixteen outfit in my closet. These are memories that are fond and outfits that take you back to a special time and place. I get it ! But the truth is, they don’t serve any purpose in your closet. I didn’t donate these items, but rather stored them in bins and put them in a storage warehouse. Anytime I feel the need to go back to them, I can.
Tip 5: Be You! I used to give in to all the trends. I even had a nose piercing when I was younger because it was “in”. I realized later that not all trends are for everyone. If the shoulder pads look is not for you, don’t buy it just to try it because those pieces are the ones you’ll be tossing out in next year’s closet clean-up. Be daring with your fashion sense, but also remember to be you!
Tip 6: Section your items! This makes getting dressed so much easier in the morning, I swear! Keep jeans with jeans, blouses with blouses, tees with tees, and jackets & coats grouped. What I find the most helpful is folding jeans, tees, and sweats– hanging jackets, coats, dresses and blouses. The real estate in your closet is precious and we want to make the most out of it! That way when you’re looking for something to wear the picking process is seamless.
All closets are different and they are an expression to each personality. Maintaining them neat is usually the issue, but I hope that these tips can actually go a long way for you all. One last tip for your closet is to have a full length mirror next to it with some good lighting to appreciate your daily outfit! Lots of love and happy holidays !
